Tamarindus indica ‘Edible Tamarind’ย

A large evergreen shade tree with small dense foliage and attractive hanging flowers followed by edible pods. It is wind tolerant, commonly grown in the north of the state where it is able to withstand cyclones.ย 

Position:ย Full sun, will not tolerate waterlogging

Size & Habit: Likely to reach 15m in Perth, rounded canopy

Flower: Pink and cream, spring and summer

Fruit: Elongated pod, sweet to sour pulp

Skin: Hard, brown

Cropping: Year round, pods may take up to 10 months to mature

Harvest/Maturity: May take 7-12 years to fruitย 

Pollination: Self-fertile but does best with cross pollination

Uses: Can be eaten fresh or cooked into sauces, chutneys and savory dishes. Commonly used in a variety of South and South East Asian recipes.ย
