Borax contains Boron which develops growing tissue in young shoots, roots, flower buds and fruits. Deficiency symptoms vary between plant species. They may include; death of terminal and lateral buds, young leaves thicken, curl and become brittle, lower petals become brown and eventually die or chlorosis in young leaves with a reddish-purple colouring.

Boron deficiencies are most common in alkaline soil, so it is recommended you test the soil pH and apply correcting agents if needed.
