Dimocarpus longan – ‘Kohala’

Price range: $114.99 through $149.99

A cultivar originally developed in Hawaii, it produces clusters of large fruit with a sweet slightly spiced flavour. It is a large evergreen tree similar to the Lychee but generally hardier and faster to grow.

Position: Needs a full sun to part shade position with protection from extreme weather

Size & Habit: Evergreen with a symmetrical habit, 10-20m

Flower: Cream clusters

Fruit: Sweet and spicy, translucent white with a single brown/black seed

Skin: Leathery, pale brown to tan

Cropping: Summer, early season

Harvest/Maturity: Can take 3-6 years to fruit

Pollination: Self-fertile

Uses: Eating fresh, dried or frozen. It is commonly used in Asian desserts and dishes.
