Backhousia citriodora – ‘Lemon Myrtle’
$19.99 – $184.99
A bushy small to medium tree that can grow up to 8m tall in its rainforest home but unlikely to reach that size in the home garden in Perth. It is more likely to grow into a 3m tall and 3m wide shrub. It has lovely, dark green, lemon-scented leaves and produces sprays of creamy flowers in autumn..
Leaves are used fresh or dried and ground to make tea, or are added to cakes, sauces and meat dishes. Its leaves contain the lemon-lime oil “citral”. When harvesting remove leaves as needed but be sure not to take more than one third of the leaves at a time.
It should be planted in fertile, well drained soil in a part shade to full sun position. It needs to be in a position protected from frost and extreme cold.
