Akebia quinata – ‘Chocolate Vine’

Akebia is a vigorous, semi-evergreen, twining climber with palmate/trifoliate leaves, and fragrant brownish-purple cup-shaped flowers that give it its name. A robust plant, Akebia may need to be kept in check with regular pruning. Grow over fences and trellises, train across wires or over pergolas. Flowering period is from spring to summer, and flowers may be followed by sausage-shaped fruits if pollinated.

Plant into well-drained, improved soil, and mulch well to keep root run cool.
