Musa acuminata – ‘Pacific Plantain’

Position: Full sun, protect from strong winds (especially cold winds) and frost. 

Size & Habit: 2-5m H, palm-like appearance

Flower: Long spike, can be eaten as a vegetable but fruit will then not form

Fruit: Very large, starchy and tough

Skin: Green skin, as skin turns black the fruit becomes sweeter

Cropping: Can fruit year round

Harvest/Maturity: Will take 2 to 3 years to fruit

Pollination: Self-fertile

Uses: Can be used where you would use potato; fried, baked, added to stews, mashed and boiled. Common in tropical cuisines.
