Malpighia glabra – ‘Barbados Cherry’

A bushy shrub to small tree with sweet-tart fruit that resemble cherry fruit. The fruit is known for its high vitamin C content. Has ornamental pink flowers in spring and summer.

Position: Full sun, protected from cold wind and frost

Size & Habit: 2-5m, can be trimmed as a single stem tree or left as a shrub

Flower: Pink, spring and summer

Fruit: Orange/ yellow juicy flesh, sweet with some tartness

Skin: Deep crimson, thin

Cropping: Summer, can crop multiple times per season

Harvest/Maturity: Can fruit in the first year of growing

Pollination: Self-fertile

Uses: Juicing, eating fresh, preserving into jams and sauces or freezing to consume later.
