Nepenthes spp – ‘Tropical Pitcher Plant’

A unique plant that forms jug like growths at the end of its leaves that hold liquid and digest bugs and other critters that fall into them. They produce large green leaves and have an attractive vining habit.

They are an excellent indoor and patio plant as they can catch any bugs in your house, just don’t look inside the pitchers as you might be disgusted at what secretly lives in your home. They can also be grown outdoors if they are grown in protected places, like under a shady tree canopy.

They needs to be grown in an free draining, inert substrate like sphagnum moss or orchid bark (make sure it has no fertiliser added). They also need to be watered with distilled or rain water as they do not like having too many minerals in their water. Indoors they should be grown in bright light, they could even get some full sun on them if worked up to it but outdoors they should be in a bright but shaded position protected from full sun.
