Physalis peruviana – ‘Golden Gem’
$14.99
Cape Gooseberry is a medium evergreen shrub, desired for its production of edible fruit. Like tomatoes they are self pollinating but can be assisted by gently shaking the plant while in bloom.
It produces small, round, golden yellow fruit about the size of a cherry tomato. These are distinctively flavoured, with a sweet and mildly tart flavour and can be eaten straight from the shrub, or used in deserts and salads. Fruit is grown in ornate, lantern-like calyxes which have a protective function while the fruit is forming, then dry out and open as it ripens.
The shrub is reasonably drought tolerant and requires a sun to part shade position with a soil rich in organic matter.
