Onion Chives are a clumping easy to grow perennial herb with a light onion flavour. Their showy blueish-purple flowers appear on stalks making an attractive addition to the garden. The flowers are also edible and make an attractive addition to a salad or as a garnish.
Bees are highly attracted to Chive flowers.
Flowering Season: Best in Spring and Summer
Position: Full sun. Prefer rich, moist soil.
Harvest: Leaves can be harvested at any stage but 10-15cm is optimal.
Uses: In any dish where a light onion flavour is wanted. Add to butter for an aromatic topping on corn, pasta dishes or garlic bread. Blossoms can be used to infuse vinegar.
Size: 30cmH x 30cm W
Care Tips: Keeping your chive plants snipped back will control any dried yellow stems that appear from taking over as the plant ages. Regular harvesting will also assist with continued green growth and trigger more flowers. Regular use of a liquid fertiliser such as Ecovital will help keep Chives happy and healthy.
