A kitchen essential herb, Sweet Basil is an easy to grow summer annual that thrives in our mediterranean climate.

Basil pairs well with other commonly used kitchen herbs including parsley, chives, thyme, tarragon, garlic and oregano.

Particularly tasty when used with tomatoes (think fresh bruschetta on crusty bread). Blend basil with pinenuts, garlic, parmesan and olive oil to make delicious pesto.

Harvest leaves just before use to ensure the best flavour.

Basil flowers are an excellent bee attractant so will assist with pollination of other plants in your veggie patch. Basil also grows well from seed so be sure to collect some each year (see care tips below).

Position: Full sun to part shade. Basil likes fertile, moist soil. Highly sensitive to frost.

Care Tips: Regular applications of a liquid fertiliser such as Ecovital are essential to keep your Basil at it’s best. Regular harvesting will also extend the life of this generally annual herb. Harvest all leaves as the late Autumn cold sets in.

Once Basil is allowed to flower and go to seed the leaves generally take on a more bitter taste. So if you want to attract bees and collect seed why not have a few plants scattered throughout the season to get the best of both worlds.
