Citrus bergamia – Bergamot Orange

A highly fragrant Orange grown for its aromatic scented foliage and rind. 

Position: Full sun in improved, free draining soil. Does not tolerate frost. 

Size & Habit: 3-4m H, evergreen dark green glossy leaves. 

Flower: Star shaped white flowers with a citrus scent in spring. 

Fruit: Green slightly pear shaped young fruit matures to lemon yellow.

Skin: Rough, shiny and often ribbed

Cropping: Fruit matures in winter. Pick when skin colour has changed. 

Pollination: Self fertile

Uses: The rind has a heavenly citrusy yet floral aroma. The oil is used to scent perfumes and soaps. Can be combined with black tea for Earl and Lady Grey. The zest can be used in cooking and baking. The fruit itself is very sour.
