This is an edible native plant with peppery flavoured leaves and flowers that can be used in salads. The female plant produces edible berries in autumn which can be used as a pepper substitute when dried. It can grow to 5m tall and 4m wide but can be kept pruned down to 2m tall. It can be grown in the garden as a multi-use edible shrub or in a pot as an ornamental edible. It is a very cold hardy plant able to survive cold wind, frost and exposure. In Perth it will need to be protected from the hot weather, winds, and full summer sun. It should be planted into well-drained soils improved with organic matter and mulched in summer.
