Atriplex nummularia – ‘Old Man Saltbush’ 

 

Price range: $18.99 through $29.99

Fast growing shrub commonly used as a livestock grazing plant. The seeds were traditionally used as a food source by the Aboriginal people. The leaves are also edible and have a salty flavour, as well as being rich in protein, antioxidants and minerals.

Can be treated like a leafy vegetable; enjoy blanched, wrapped around meat or fish, as a stuffing or in salads. Can also be dried and used as a herb.

Woody shrub up to 3 m high, can be kept smaller or hedged with regular pruning. Tolerates drought, salinity and sandy soil once established but young plants perform best in loamy but well drained soil. Grow in full sun to part shade – protect from frosts.
