Carpinus betulus is a shade-loving medium to tall deciduous tree, which prefers moderate soil fertility and moisture. It is smooth barked, with dense foliage of fine toothed green leaves, and resembles the beech tree in many ways. Leaves turn yellow in Autumn. Hornbeams are widely used in landscape gardening, mainly as tall hedges and for topiary.
