It is a deciduous shrub or small tree with an attractive white flower. The bark, light grey when young, changes to a coarse grey outer bark with lengthwise furrowing. The fruit is a dark purple to black berry 3โ5 mm in diameter, produced in drooping clusters in the late autumn.
Position: Acidic to slightly acidic well-drained improved soil. Must be protected from hot winds and soil kept moist at all times.ย
Uses:ย Traditionally used as a medicinal plant with stem bark, leaves, flowers, fruit, root extracts used to treat bronchitis, coughs, upper respiratory cold infections and fever. Fully ripe berries are edible after cooking and can be used to make jam, jelly and chutney. Flower heads used in infusions. Strong smelling foliage can be used to keep flies away.ย
