Alcantarea hybrid – ‘Silver Plum’

A huge bromeliad growing to 1.5m tall and 1.5m wide with tough, silvery foliage and a deep purple underside. It flowers once in its lifetime, sending up a huge spike with multiple flowers that can take up to a year to fully open. Once it flowers it produces multiple clones from the base of the plant before slowly dying at which point one of the baby plants will take its place.

It is an excellent sculptural plant for landscaping and mass plantings. It is also a wonderful specimen plant for pots and containers.

It should be planted in part shade in well drained soil. The centre of the plant should always be filled with water. It can handle light frost but may be blown over or damaged by very strong winds.
