Musa acuminata x balbisiana – ‘Blue Java’

A cold-tolerant variety that produces delicious fruit with a soft, creamy texture and a flavour reminiscent of vanilla. The maturing fruit has an attractive blue tint but ripens to yellow.

Position: Full sun, protect from strong winds

Size & Habit: 2-5m H, palm-like appearance

Flower: Long spike, can be eaten as a vegetable but fruit will then not form

Fruit: Creamy vanilla/ custard flavour and texture

Skin: Blue tint, ripens to yellow

Cropping: Can fruit year-round

Harvest/Maturity: Will take 2 to 3 years to fruit

Pollination: Self-fertile

Uses: Eating fresh, used for baking, adding to desserts, smoothies, and breakfasts
