Aloe vera is a tough succulent that has been used as a medicinal plant for centuries. The thick, fleshy green leaves have a serrated edge with small white teeth. It produces beautiful clusters of star-like flowers that are a rich reward for growing this as a feature plant in the garden or as an indoor plant.

The gel from the leaves can be used as a soothing balm for sunburn, as a healing ointment for minor cuts and scrapes and can be applied direct to the skin after small burns. It is a useful plant to have near the barbecue as a first aid treatment for minor mishaps.

Plant in the garden where it is protected from afternoon sun. Or plant it into an indoor pot and let it filter toxins out of the air.
