Dwarf Fruit Trees for Perth gardens

There is no doubt that gardens in Perth are getting smaller. There is more and more house going onto smaller and smaller sized blocks. At the same time, many people want to grow their own food and make whatever garden space they have more productive.

This is where the dwarf fruit tree comes into its own. Dwarf fruit trees produce the same sized fruit, however the tree has been bred or grafted to be more compact.

There is a wide range of Dwarf Fruit Trees available  including dwarf forms of Almond, Apple, Apricot, Banana, Blueberry,  Cherry,  Grapefruit, Lemon, Lime, Mandarin, Mulberry, Nashi Pear, Nectarine, Olive, Orange, Peach, Peacharine, Pear, Persimmon, Plum,  Pummelo and Tangelo.

A great option for small garden spaces, many dwarf varieties can also be grown in pots in patio gardens, on balconies and in courtyards. There can even be different varieties within the dwarf range such as Super Dwarf or Semi Dwarf.

As well as taking up less room, the smaller varieties are easier to manage. They can be kept to a more manageable size, they are easier to net to keep the birds at bay and they are easier to spray if they get any pests and diseases.

CITRUS:

Citrus varieties are very popular including Lemons, Oranges, Limes, Mandarins, Tangelo, Pummelo, Kumquat. You can grow your citrus in a pot or planted out in the garden. Most varieties are available as Dwarf (to 1.5m) or Semi Dwarf (up to 2.5m). They cope well with our mediterranean climate and will almost bonsai to the pot. They are evergreen and have beautiful scented blossom in spring to summer. The fruit adds a splash of colour in the garden. It can be used in juices, cordials, salad dressing, cooking and baking. The Dwarf Eureka lemon is a reliable performer and produces juicy lemons almost all year round. The Australian Native Lime, the Finger Lime, is naturally quite compact and will grow well in a pot.

STONE FRUIT:

Stone fruit deciduous trees, including Apricots, Nectarines, Peaches, Plums are available in dwarf forms. Many can also be grown as multi grafted forms where two or more varieties are grafted onto the one main trunk. Check if your selected tree needs a cross pollinator or is self fertile.

SOFT SKINNED:

Apples come in dwarf and narrow columnar varieties that take up very little space and do well in a pot. The dwarf apples are tasty and add spring flower plus summer green to any small space.
