Kohlrabi, also called German turnip, is a biennial vegetable. It is like a low, stout cultivar of wild cabbage with a vivd purple colour and grows like a turnip. It is the same species as cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, kale, brussels sprouts, collard greens, savoy cabbage, and gai lan.
Position: Prefers rich, well drained soil in full sun.
Uses: It can be eaten raw or cooked. Raw it has a sweet but peppery taste like radish and can be finely sliced into coleslaw or salads. The bulbous root can be peeled and sauteed or roasted like root vegetables.
