Also known as Plum Pine. It’s juicy, pulpy fruits have a grape-like texture and a sweetish, mild pine flavour that is enhanced by cooking. The berries are purple-black in colour, grow up to 2.5cm in diameter and contain a hard inedible seed. They ripen in between March and July. May be eaten raw, or made into jams and jellies. Both male and female plants are needed for fruit production so they are best planted as multiples – ideal for a hedge!

Slowing growing to 8 m high by 4 m wide, easily kept pruned smaller if desired. Grows in full sun to part shade. Prefers rich, non-alkaline soil but will tolerate a range of soil types as long as they are well-drained. Resistant to salt spray.
