A bushy annual or biennial herb with large, bright green edible leaves and spikes of blue flowers followed by masses of small, mottled oval seeds.ย
Position: Full sun. Plant after any danger of frost has passed. Very well drained soil required.ย
Uses:ย Seeds have a sweet nutty flavour and are eaten whole, sprinkled on salads or cereal, placed in water or juice and allowed to swell before drinking. Ground and mixed with flour to make cakes and bread, or cooked in stews. Leaves and young shoots used in tea or salads.ย
Harvest:ย Cut back after flowering and prior to seed drop. Collect and store seed in paper bag.ย
