Pouteria australis – “Black Apple”
Large fruit resembling apples or plums. Fruit is shiny and purplish-black, with large seeds, and flesh is white with a purple tinge and sweet, fibrous flesh. Fruit is eaten fresh or used for pies, juice, vinegar, or cider.
In its native rainforest environment, this tree will grow to 25m tall, however will grow about half this height in cultivation. The wood of this tree is prized for carving.
Plant into well drained soil, and while young keep well watered and protected from hot winds and afternoon summer sun.
